Some people feel a bit nervous about the idea of working on their mental approach to their game. They often feel they should know exactly what to do and can feel confused when the books they read don't work for them. Often players tell me that they have asked themselves why they can't just sort it out without help from a coach? They can often see that what they are doing doesn't work, but can't seem to get a powerful enough picture or plan in place to make the real changes that will get their results. And even though they know it forms a large part of their game, there is often some reluctance to take part because it is seen as somehow different from working on the physical game.
Although we are all aware of the benefits available through changing our thinking and behaviours - sometimes people have concerns about making those changes. Such concerns result in players never fully achieving their potential because they are held back by negative emotions such as fear and anxiety, limiting decisions and flawed thinking strategies. One of our guiding principles is that everyone has the mental skills they need to achieve the results they want; sometimes they just don't know how to get in touch with them... and that's where we can help!
It is true that we are changing our beliefs and perception of the world every day. Just think for a moment... How would life be if you knew everything that was going to happen from moment to moment? Now, really think about that... And how do you feel? How boring would your life be if you knew everything that was going to happen every second of every day? As human beings we exist to change and transform. If we were unable to do this we would go mad!
Consider now the behaviour of a wild tiger? If it tries to catch its prey and fails, it will use a different approach next time. However, as humans we can survive pretty well without making too many changes. Most of us don't need to hunt for food to survive! And that means we tend to do the same things over and again, until something bad forces us to change.
Mental game training is essentially about changing old habits and beliefs that are no longer effective and replacing them with behaviours, beliefs, and ways of thinking that achieve the results we want.
And your mental game training is more than that... why? Because it is also about personal tranformation. It is about having smarter, more efficient and effective ways of dealing with all situations.
Imagine you have some anxiety about making a putt to win a match... a stressful situation for some? What is that all about? Fear of the consequences, fear of the bad feeling you get from missing the putt? Learning to manage the fear associated with this really rather simple action means you will be better able to cope in situations where the consequences of your actions really are important.
